To be as forthright as possible, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West was not on my radar when it was announced last year. Apart from a handful of pretty screens, it subsequently managed to slip by me in the madness of the 2010 summer trade show season. Having now spent several hours with the first half of the game, it’s impossible to think I could have missed it. Based on what I’ve played so far, Enslaved deserves a spot on everyone’s...

A recent PAX interview by RockBandAide with Harmonix’s John Drake reveals a ton of minutiae for hardcore fans, and confirms that Rock Band 3 will allow you to export the RB2 tracks for a fee — as you could with RB1 . Drake states that the the export feature will work for all three consoles, though there are always ” a couple songs that get complicated ” when it comes to re-licensing. Official pricing and details regarding...

When Insomniac announced the co-op focused Ratchet & Clank: All 4 One at Gamescom last month, we were all thinking the same thing: How did the series with the clever titles – Going Commando; Up Your Arsenal; Size Matters; Quest for Booty – miss out on the most obvious title here? 4play. Duh. It turns out the guys at Insomniac didn’t miss it, they just decided not to use it. “At the end of the day, I think we didn’t...

Somewhere there’s an alternate dimension where monster games like Rampage and War of the Monsters are not oddities but rather fine examples of a whole “monsters destroying crap” genre. Eat Them! , which I played recently at PAX 2010, is a game directly from that dimension. In Fluffy Logic’s ( Savage Moon ) upcoming PSN release, you play as a monster that you’ve customized every slimy, scaly inch of  Read More →

Hothead revealed Swarm for the first time back at E3 . Then, we didn’t know much about the game — it’s actually still in pre-Alpha, despite a launch window of “early 2011.” Today, we were given a demo of the game at PAX and finally understood what we were dealing with. It’s hard to see the game and not compare it to Lemmings . Both games have a seemingly dull-witted cast who have found themselves inexplicably...

I know times are tight, especially for one-man indie dev teams, but, as a service to the gamers of Earth, Chris Hecker has got to get a better booth. In a nondescript corner of PAX, under a nondescript banner and sporting slightly worse than nondescript graphics (all placeholder, Hecker assured) it would have been easy to miss SpyParty . It would have been a particularly unfortunate fate considering it was (drumroll) the best thing I’ve...

A NeoGAF forumite going by the moniker “Raoul Duke” recently uncovered a timeworn Easter egg hidden within the folds of the aquatic GameCube racer, Wave Race: Blue Storm — and appropriately enough, this egg is awfully rotten. By entering in a super-obscure code on the game’s audio settings screen, players can change the typically pleasant (and omnipresent) pit crew commenter to a sardonic so-and…  Read More →

Following Atlus’s announcement of a merger into its parent company Index Holdings, you may have been concerned about the state of the developer and publisher. “But what of our RPGs about super-stylish high school students?,” you may have asked. “Any news about my beloved sci-fi surgery simulators?” “Will I still have dungeons in which to crawl?” Atlus USA president Shinichi Suzuki issued a statement...

After what is arguably the longest, most troubled development in the history of video games, Duke Nukem Forever is finally, really, truly here. It’s not being shown secretly, behind-closed-doors at some industry event. Instead, it’s at PAX, an event that is, more than any other in this industry, consumer facing, and that tangibility is a big part of Gearbox’s reveal. Wait, who? Gearbox Software, the Texas-based dev who’s...

In recent days publisher 2K Games has been teasing a big announcement at their booth at the Penny Arcade Expo. Turns out the big surprise is the confirmation that developer Gearbox Software, the team behind Borderlands , is completing development of the long, long-awaited title Duke Nukem Forever for release sometime in 2011. Developer 3D Realms had been working on the title since 1997, as it was intended to be the sequel to the huge PC hit Duke...

SNK’s oddball bullet hell shmup, KOF Sky Stage , has finally been dated for Xbox Live Arcade — in Japan, at least. Masochists can check it out on September 15 for 800 MS Points ($10). That’s a small price to pay to see Terry Bogard and company fly around and shoot stuff. And, y’ know, play a super-tough game. The game originally launched in Japanese arcades back in January. PSP users can also access KOF Sky Stage right...

It feels so weird to be telling you this, but Ubisoft has made an advergame based on Tom Clancy’s HAWX 2 and … it’s kinda good ! It’s a pretty basic shmup with an 8-bit theme, though it’s a bit more forgiving than most traditional games in the genre. (Your plane can actually take more than one hit before going down.) Everything else is pretty much what you’d expect: a rad soundtrack; several weapon types;...

EA Sports covers nearly all the big sports: football, soccer, golf, basketball, hockey, etc. But will it ever tackle a more niche interest? Its president, Peter Moore, certainly sees that as a possibility — just not on the current HD consoles. Obviously, the main obstacle in the path of these smaller sports is development cost. “It would be very difficult for us to justify putting a full-blown next-gen team…  Read More →

We know you’re awfully loyal to your chosen MAG army (S.V.E.R.4.E.V.E.R., suckas), but haven’t you ever wondered how the other half two thirds lives? A new option will give you the ability to do just that — players can now purchase a second and third character slot for $0.99 a piece. Here’s the rub: These paid character slots will only be active for 30 days, at which point they’ll need to be reactivated with another...

On the same day as Apple announced the rollout of its iOS Game Center platform for next week, Aurora Feint, creator of the OpenFeint social network for iPhone/iPod Touch, says it will enable real-time multiplayer gameplay between iOS and Android devices later this year with OpenFeint PlayTime. The new developer tools will also allow real-time voice chat during gameplay across both mobile platforms. “Traditionally, multiplayer technology...
